Guide to Selecting the Right Necklace for Your Neckline

Whether you are wearing jeans and a t-shirt or an evening dress, the perfect necklace will add just the right finishing touch to your outfit! Figuring out which one will look best with the type of neckline you are wearing isn't always easy. Below are a few tips and suggestions that may help.

V-Neck

Select a necklace that follows the lines of the v-neck and falls at least an inch above the base of it. If the neckline is cut fairly low, you may want to choose a necklace with a drop in the front to emphasize cleavage!

Turtleneck

Longer necklaces, pendants and lariats will look wonderful with this high neckline! Choose pieces that will stand out against the fabric.

Scoop Neck

This round neckline may be plunging or cut a little higher. Choose a necklace that follows the cut of the neckline, without crowding it. A 16-18" necklace that falls just around the collarbone will look terrific!

Sweetheart

Almost any style of necklace or pendant will look great with this feminine, heart-shaped neckline. Because there is a slight drop at the front, you may also consider a necklace with a drop. The longest part of the necklace should fall at least one inch above the neckline of the dress.

Jewel or Crew Neckline

A high-cut round neckline that is versatile and very easy to accessorize! A shorter necklace or pendant will accent it perfectly. If you prefer longer necklaces, opt for one that follows the round neckline.

Boat or Bateau Neckline

Accentuating the collarbone and shoulders, this wide neckline is cut straight across from shoulder to shoulder. A perfect way to make the sharp neckline a bit more feminine is with a shorter necklace that slightly overlaps the top of it.

Strapless

Cut straight across the bodice with no straps or sleeves, this style leaves a lot of room to show off a beautiful necklace! Choose a piece that won't overlap the top of the neckline; any necklace under 20 inches in length should work well.

Button-Up or Open Neck Shirt

An especially versatile neckline--almost any style of necklace will look terrific with it! You may want to wear a shorter necklace underneath the unbuttoned neck or a longer necklace over the shirt; or wear both for a layered look! A lariat is also an excellent choice; it can be worn long over the shirt or wrapped twice for a shorter look.
